Wildcats Earn 1-1 Road Draw Behind Jameson’s Late Equalizer
ST. LOUIS - Senior forward Stella Jameson tapped in a game-tying goal in the 79th minute to help Baker women's soccer pull out a 1-1 draw on the road at Missouri Baptist on Wednesday afternoon.
The Wildcats trailed for a good chunk of the match after the Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute on a ridiculous long-range shot. Despite a relentless attack from the BU offense, MBU clung to the lead until Jameson's late equalizer, which came on Baker's 16th shot of the match.
Overall, BU outshot the Spartans, 21-12, with 11 of them coming on goal for the Wildcats. Darcy Cato and Sidney Claeys each had three shots on goal, while Caitlin Youles joined the pair with four shots in the match.
Baker keeper Sophia Holloway tallied four saves for the second straight match while making her 11th start of the season.
Ahead of MBU's goal, the Wildcats almost hit the scoreboard first in the 17th minute on a counter-attack following a Spartans free kick deep in BU's defensive half. Claeys led the charge and played a ball through to Naomi Harris-Hyche on her long sprint, but the MBU keeper was able to slide in at the last minute and spoil the action.
The Spartans broke the tie in the 29th after what looked to be a cross from one of their forwards sailed into the upper 90 to give the hosts a 1-0 lead on an excuse-me goal.
The score remained that way until a late rally, sparked by Harris-Hyche and punctuated by Jameson, rewarded the Wildcats for their persistence. On a throw-in from Claeys, Harris-Hyche read the ball perfectly to drift inside the MBU box and slip a cross over to Jameson for a one-touch, game-tying tap-in.
It was the fourth goal of the season for Jameson and her first since scoring in three out of four matches in early September. Harris-Hyche earned her second assist of the year and has now recorded a point in seven of her last 10 matches, leading the team with seven goals in her freshman campaign.
With four games left in the regular season, the Wildcats sit on the fringe of one of the top-eight spots of the Heart Conference Tournament. They are 2-4-3 in conference play this fall and are just one point back of the final spot for the league playoffs.
Up next, Baker wraps up its late-season road trip with a match at Graceland on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Lamoni, Iowa. The women's match will follow the men's match, which will start at 5 p.m. in Lamoni.
