Late Goals Force Wildcats into 4-4 Road Draw at William Woods
FULTON, Mo. - A pair of goals in the final stages spoiled a four-goal night for Baker women's soccer as the Wildcats settled for a 4-4 draw with William Woods tonight in a high-scoring midweek conference matchup.
Each team scored twice in both halves, with Carys English striking first for Baker seven minutes into the match. Sidney Claeys followed with a goal in the 24th minute, while Stella Jameson and Brenley Cunningham scored back-to-back goals in the second half to give the Wildcats their most goals against a conference opponent since 2023.
The Owls erased a two-point deficit with a couple of goals in the final 12 minutes, including the game-tying goal in the 89th minute.
Back-to-back corner kicks led to the opening goal for BU, with the latter one being played short to Amelia Wiles whose arching entry deflected off the WWU keeper and left for English to clean up for her second goal of the season.
After the Owls tied the match just over a minute after Baker's opening goal, the Wildcats reclaimed the lead midway through the first half with high pressure from Darcy Cato, resulting in a turnover in the WWU defense. Claeys eventually found herself with the ball and launched a strike from the edge of the 18-yard box to put BU on top, 2-1.
The Owls knotted the match once again to send the teams into halftime on a 2-2 deadlock.
In the second half, Jameson logged another go-ahead goal for BU after following up a rebounded shot from Rihanna Blanchard to push the Wildcats back in front, 3-2.
Then, just three minutes later, another mistake from the Owls paid off for Cunningham this time as the junior transfer converted on a breakaway shot for her first goal as a Wildcat.
William Woods got within one in the 78th and then scored on a breakaway goal of its own with just under two minutes left to come back and force a 4-4 draw, deflating the Wildcats' first conference match against the Owls, who are competing in the Heart for the first time this fall.
The two teams combined for 24 shots on the night, with WWU holding a slight 14-10 edge. Meanwhile, Baker had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks, with all six of their corner set pieces coming in the first half.
English's goal marked the fourth time this season the Wildcats scored within the first 11 minutes, with their earliest one coming from Naomi Harris-Hyche (02:10) in the previous match against No. 13 MidAmerica Nazarene.
Claeys and Jameson each recorded their third goals of the season to remain tied for the team lead, while Cato earned her club-best fourth assist of 2025.
Moving to 1-3-2 on the year, Baker returns home to face Grand View on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 5 p.m. at Hartley Field.
