Wildcats Compete in Final Road Tournament at Grand View Open
DES MOINES, Iowa - Heading into the final stages of the year, Baker women's wrestling competed in its last road tournament of the regular season, traveling to Des Moines, Iowa to take part in the Grand View Open on Saturday.
Overall, the Wildcats had 18 wrestlers competing at the single-day tournament, with half competing in the Gold division and the other half in the Silver division. Freshman Lucia Henriquez claimed the championship in the Silver division at 145 pounds.
Henriquez, who is in her first season at BU out of Park Hill, Mo., went 3-0 in her matches to earn her second individual title of the year. She won the 145-pound bracket at Indiana Tech's Warrior Open a few weeks ago.
Facing off against some of the country's best in the Gold division, Margaret Jordan (180) was the only BU wrestler to record multiple wins in the upper bracket. Jordan opened up her tournament with a huge pin over Payton Sholander of Wayland Baptist, who ranks top-10 nationally, and added a 4-2 decision win before bowing out in the consolation bracket.
Mariam Shariq earned a pin in her second match at Gold 138 pounds, taking down a fellow conference wrestler from William Woods in the second period.
Maddie O'Brien and Reagan Wonnell each came away with multiple wins in the Silver division of the 145-pound bracket. O'Brien won back-to-back matches on a close decision and then a quick pin, while Wonnell used a tech fall to reach the championship quarterfinals before tacking on a takedown in the consolation fourth round.
Up next, Baker will host the 2nd Annual Jimmy May Open on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 10:30 a.m. in Baldwin City. With conference home basketball games that day in the Collins Center, the Wildcats will hold the tournament at the Baldwin High School Gym.
