Robledo, Henriquez Highlight Wildcats’ Trip to Warrior Open

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Heading out on a late January road trip, Baker women's wrestling posted a strong showing at the Warrior Open this past weekend in Fort Wayne, Ind., punctuated by a couple of individual titles.

The Wildcats had 11 wrestlers earn placement finishes, including championship performances from Kylie Robledo (110) and Lucia Henriquez (145). The two-day tournament, hosted by Indiana Tech, featured over 35 teams and 400 wrestlers spread across two divisions - Maximus and Pancake.

Robledo rattled off four straight wins to claim the 110-pound Maximus title, finishing atop the podium for the second straight tournament and the third time overall this season. The senior from El Paso, Texas, started off with a pin in her first match and then closed her run with a 6-1 decision over the Warriors' Mackenzie Smith, who ranks 16th nationally, in the championship bout.

Henriquez, a freshman from Park Hill, Mo., also turned in a perfect outing in the Hoosier State, going 4-0 and dominating her competition with three pins and a tech fall to win the Pancake championship.

Hailee Crosland (160), Audrey Darnell (131), and Mariam Shariq (138) each placed fifth, with Crosland and Darnell earning three wins apiece in the Maximus division. Shariq won her first two matches via a pin and a tech fall before taking fifth on a forfeit in the placement match.

Three Wildcats came away with sixth-place finishes in Laila Jordan (110), Kylee Slyter (124), and Nevaeh Wardlow (180). Jordan won three matches before bowing out on an injury forfeit, while Slyter strung together back-to-back tech falls in the Maximus 124. Wardlow pinned her first opponent of the tournament.

Sophia Castillo (117), Jade Martin (145), and Anna Patz (138) rounded out the medalists for BU, with the trio taking eighth in their respective brackets. Castillo earned a couple of pins at 117 pounds, Martin pulled out an 11-6 decision win before bowing out of the tournament and Patz added consecutive victories in the Maximus division at 138 pounds.

Baker will be back in action next week, returning to the Collins Center on Thursday, Jan. 29, to host a wrestling doubleheader against Central Methodist with the men's team. The women's dual is slated to start at 6 p.m., with the men to follow.
