Women’s Wrestling Posts Nine Placement Finishes at Ottawa Open
OTTAWA, Kan. - Competing in the first of back-to-back events hosted by the Braves, the Baker women's wrestling team had nine wrestlers earn top-five honors, including a first-place performance from Aileya Sath, at the Ottawa Open on Saturday.
Sath's championship at 131 pounds highlighted a solid all-around outing for BU, with two other wrestlers joining Sath in reaching the pinnacle match of their respective brackets. Sath became the second straight Wildcat to collect an individual title through the first two tournaments after Kylie Robledo came out on top in the season opener at Friends.
Robledo pinned her first two opponents at 124 pounds before coming up short in an intense title bout that saw her lose by one point on a 11-10 decision. Mariam Shariq also started off with back-to-back pins before falling to Sath in the 131-pound championship to give BU a pair of runner-up finishes.
Zoey Freeman made it a 1-2-3 finish for the Wildcats at 131 pounds, winning three of her four matches to place third. Chloe Herrick and Kylee Slyter teamed up to finish in back-to-back spots in the 124-pound bracket. Herrick won three straight matches before falling in the third-place match, while Slyter won her placement match on a 7-1 decision to place fifth.
Wrestling at 138 pounds, freshman Giada Cucchiara turned in an excellent showing to earn her first top-four finish. Cucchiara totaled four wins and battled against a top-15 nationally ranked wrestler in the placement match before settling for fourth.
Liz Cope picked up four wins as well, with three of hers coming on pins and the other one being a big 14-3 tech fall, en route to a fourth-place finish at 160 pounds. Nevaeh Wardlow won four straight matches at 180 pounds, with three pins as well, before seeing her streak snapped in the third-place bout.
Baker will make a return trip down Highway 59 on Thursday, Nov. 13, to take on Ottawa in a non-conference dual starting at 6 p.m. in Ottawa, Kan.
