Women’s Basketball Falls at Home to Culver-Stockton
BALDWIN CITY - Baker women's basketball dropped its second straight Saturday afternoon matchup, falling to Culver-Stockton, 72-47, inside the Collins Center.
BU saw a one-possession game in the third quarter turn into a 25-point deficit in the fourth with Culver-Stockton tallying 26 points in the decisive period.
C-SC (30-of-66) nearly doubled BU's (17-of-43) made field goals in the game, boasted a 16-3 advantage in offensive rebounds and forced a total of 24 turnovers, including eight Baker miscues in the fourth quarter.
Overall, Baker had 10 different players reach the scoring column, with Corrine Cole's 11 points leading the balanced attack. Gabby Rose finished with nine points and Taniya Tease turned in an all-around game with six points, four rebounds and four assists.
Baker battled back after an initial surge from Culver-Stockton to start the game, holding C-SC scoreless for a five-minute stretch while layups from Cole, Rose, and Maddie Wilbeck pushed Baker in front, 8-7.
On the last play of the period, Rose found Cole in the lane for a quick bucket before the buzzer to give BU a 13-12 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Culver-Stockton opened up the second quarter with a 12-0 run to swing BU's narrow first-quarter lead into a double-digit advantage for the visiting Wildcats. A three from Rihanna Blanchard halted the run, but C-SC reeled off an 8-2 burst right after to stay in front.
Rose tallied the final four points of the quarter as BU trailed 34-24 at the break.
Baker came out of halftime with a strong third quarter, outscoring C-SC, 15-12 in the frame to trail by seven going into the fourth. A pair of 3-pointers from Cole and Kennedy Bryan, along with a layup by Tease, helped BU get within two at 38-36 - Baker's closest deficit since early in the second quarter.
Kaylee Heinen splashed in another triple for BU, but C-SC stretched its lead back out to multiple possessions to spoil the rally.
Culver-Stockton followed up its late third-quarter run by controlling the final 10 minutes of play, scoring 26 points while holding Baker to just eight in the fourth. C-SC went 12-for-16 from the field in the final frame to secure the team's sixth straight win.
After back-to-back home games to start the year, Baker will travel up the road and face Benedictine on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 5:30 p.m. in Atchison, Kan.
