Women’s Flag Football Rolls Past Larks in First KCAC Road Game
HESSTON, Kan. - After picking up a big win on the program's first Senior Night on Tuesday, the Baker women's flag football team turned around and added a 50-point blowout on Wednesday night, taking care of Hesston, 50-0, in the Wildcats' first road matchup of the conference season.
BU totaled 42 points in the first half before taking off the gas in the second, tacking on a final fourth-quarter score to cap the landslide victory. Sanija Waller contributed to six of the seven touchdowns for Baker, tossing four of them and rushing in a pair to lead the team to their third 50-point outing of the last five games.
Waller scored on the Wildcats' opening series of the game, making a few defenders miss on a long run up the sideline to make it 6-0 less than four minutes into the contest. Following a Daniela Canals interception, Waller found Kaley Phillips on the first play of the drive for a 50-yard strike to make it a two-score lead.
Destiny Martinez was on the receiving end of Waller's second passing touchdown of the first quarter, scoring near the goal line to finish off the 22-0 start.
In the second quarter, freshman Breanne Santiago hauled in the first of her two touchdowns of the game, completing another short pitch-and-catch from Waller for Santiago's first career touchdown.
Waller added her second rushing touchdown after turning a quarterback scramble in the red zone into her eighth rushing score of the season.
With time winding down in the first half, Alejandra Ramos helped initiate the Wildcats' final score before halftime, taking a pass from Waller and eventually lateraling to Kaley Phillips, who took it in the rest of the way from around the 10-yard line to make it a 42-0 halftime lead for BU.
The second half featured a little less action and scoring as Baker's defense continued to dominate the Hesston offense.
Santiago garnished the victory with her second touchdown of the game, making a nice catch on a beautiful throw from Kaley Phillips on the run to put a nice bow on the Wildcats' first road win of the KCAC season.
After playing three games in five days, Baker will have a week to recharge before going back out on the road and facing William Woods on Wednesday, March 25, at 6 p.m. in Fulton, Mo.
