Wildcats Top Coyotes, 31-6, in Program’s First Senior Night
BALDWIN CITY - Closing out a four-game homestand, Baker women's flag football celebrated the program's first-ever Senior Night by taking down Kansas Wesleyan, 31-6, in a key KCAC matchup here Wednesday night at Liston Stadium.
Prior to the game, the Wildcats, who are in their third season as a program, honored senior Kaley Phillips for her dedication and contributions to the team.
Battling blustery conditions in Liston again, Baker put together arguably its best all-around game of the season, scoring in each quarter and holding the Coyotes to just one touchdown in a matchup between two of the KCAC's top-three teams of the past two years.
Mahagonay Simmons reeled in two first-half touchdown passes from Sanija Waller to spot the Wildcats a 12-0 halftime lead. Her first one came on a beautiful over-the-top throw from Waller from 19-yards out to cap an eight-play drive midway through the first quarter.
Simmons' next touchdown grab came on an impressive catch in traffic on another bomb from Waller, where Simmons was able to corral an initial bobble and finish off a nice score before halftime.
In the second half, BU opened up with a key drive that chewed up almost four minutes of clock and ended with Waller punching it in at the goal line to make it, 18-0. After another stop from the Wildcats defense, Tara Llorente added a short rushing touchdown to put the game out of reach.
With KWU breaking up the shutout late in the third, Kaley Phillips sealed the Senior Night victory with a three-yard rushing touchdown to close the books on a 31-6 win for the Wildcats.
Phillips finished the night with nine carries for 62 yards and a touchdown, while also hauling in one catch for 17 yards and firing off a couple of passes. Waller rushed for a team-high 98 yards, threw for 88 yards and totaled three touchdowns.
With the win, BU marks a 3-1 start to KCAC play, with three 20-point victories and its lone setback coming to defending national champion Ottawa last week.
Baker will finish out the season with six straight games on the road, starting off with a matchup at Hesston scheduled for tomorrow (March 16) at 6 p.m. in Hesston, Kan.
