Five Wildcats Named to KCAC Women’s Flag Football All-Conference Team

WICHITA, Kan. – After wrapping up its inaugural season in May, the Baker women's flag football team had five players selected to the 2024 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference Team as the league announced its postseason awards last week.

Destiny Martinez (So., Miami, Fla.) represented the Wildcats on the First Team Defense as well as making it on the Second Team Offense after serving as BU's primary center for the year. She led the team with 82 tackles and added four interceptions and a sack with one of the interceptions coming on a pick-six in a home game against Bethel.

Kayla Harrison and Faith Phillips were second team all-conference selections for BU with Harrison joining Martinez on the Second Team Offense and Phillips earning a spot on the Second Team Utility and Punt Team Specialist. Harrison (Fr., Miami, Fla.) racked up 70 catches for 618 yards and eight touchdowns during the regular season as one of the team's main wide receivers.

Meanwhile, Phillps (Fr., Irvington, N.J.) was a reliable two-way player for the 'Cats after nearly half of her catches went for touchdowns - 21 receptions and 10 touchdowns - and she recorded a team-best seven interceptions for the BU defense.

The Wildcats had a pair of honorable mention honorees as well with Sanija Waller and Gabriella Zabaletta landing on the list. As Baker's starting quarterback, Waller (Fr., Tallahassee, Fla.) threw for over 2,200 yards (2217) with 30 touchdowns and added 730 rushing yards with 11 touchdowns. Zabaletta (Fr., Miami, Fla.) was honored for her defense where she totaled 62 tackles and three interceptions.

In the first season of the program, Baker went 13-7 overall and hit a midseason stretch where they won six of seven games.

Posting a 9-4 record in conference play, the Wildcats earned the third seed and reached the semifinals of the KCAC Tournament in April before going on to make their first appearance at the NAIA Flag Football Finals where they came away with a postseason win over Midland.
